Memory and Mourning, Forgetting and Forgiving in Fadia Faqir’s Willow Trees Don’t Weep

This paper examines Fadia (2014) novel Willow Trees Don’t Weep where memory and mourning, forgetting and forgiveness are integrated to show the dialogic nature of these elements and the possibility of them coming together. It shows how the personal, the collective, and the historical memories can be amalgamated in the novel by drawing from the works of Halbwachs, Paul Ricoeur, and Pierre Nora. Willow Trees Don’t Weep relates a narrative of Najwa who through memory tries to reconstruct her past, the image of a father who abandoned her when she was three to become a terrorist, and her identity. With the help of scattered sites of memory (lieux de mémoire) everywhere in the novel, such as photos, letters, gifts, and her father’s diary, the protagonist can inscribe her memories as a narrative. At the end of the novel, she is able to forget and forgive to be able to mourn and go on with her future. Faqir also opened the way for a whole generation to mourn and for history to be written from a different perspective.

The Concept of Feminism in the Paper Bag Princess Fairy Tale

The aim of this research is to clarify how Princess Elizabeth in The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch, challenges social norms by illustrating a non-stereotypical view of Elizabeth and her female empowerment by breaking traditional gender roles, she also challenges the modern view of the masculinity of a hero by reversing gender roles when she chooses to save Prince Ronald herself. By taking on the fire breathing dragon and outsmarting him, Princess Elizabeth defies typical princess roles and traditional fairytales. The present study employs a qualitative approach in investigating the employment of multimodality in picture books intended for children. The visual aids significantly augment the narrative, the illustrations served to enhance the portrayal of the character's emotions and conduct, and expressions on the faces of the main characters in the story by providing a more comprehensive and expansive representation. This narrative inspires individuals to challenge established conventions and delves into the conventional portrayal of women as only striving towards marriage. It emphasizes the importance for women to establish their own aspirations and for society to endorse their choices. Princess Elizabeth has the freedom to be whomever she desires without having the obligation to get married. The significance of the fairy tale lies in its ability to prompt inquiries about established gender norms. Despite its rarity, the conclusion is impeccable and aligns with feminist tenets.

Extrajudicial Killing in Counterterrorism: Reformulating Preventive Measures

This article examines the issue of extrajudicial killings in Indonesia and their impact on human rights values and police violence. Despite being violations of international human rights norms, extrajudicial executions continue to be justified through ambiguous criminal law standards and the discretion exercised by law enforcement agencies. The article suggests changing preventive measures by setting up an independent ex-post review system, avoiding political and racial bias, and putting legal prescription and proportionality into the rules of criminal law and terrorism law. These concepts aim to enhance legal certainty and safeguard human rights, thereby fostering a more democratic approach to counterterrorism. The regulation of extrajudicial killings, while still allowing for counterterrorism actions, can contribute to mitigating police violence by upholding human rights values.

Conceptual Framework to Categorize Friday Sermon Documents with Web Scraping

Muslims have the religious obligation of engaging in five daily prayers, one of which is the significant Friday prayer, conducted as a congregational event following the Friday Sermon. Within Malaysia, the responsibility of providing these Friday Sermon materials to the national mosques is undertaken by the Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia (JAKIM). These documents, presented in both Malay and the Islamic Malay language (Jawi), are organized chronologically, with the latest on top. However, this chronological sorting system presents a challenge for users seeking specific documents aligned with particular Islamic perspectives. To address this issue, the current research strives to develop a conceptual framework for categorizing Friday Sermon documents into Islamic perspectives. The approach follows the Waterfall methodology, commencing with requirement identification and analysis and culminating in the design phase. The central outcome of this effort is the creation of a conceptual framework, which is executed through a sequence of actions including web scraping to acquire the desired documents, document cleaning, keyword extraction, tallying of recurring keywords, and ultimately, the categorization of documents based on distinct Islamic perspectives. The practical significance of categorizing these Friday Sermon documents cannot be overstated. By implementing such a system, users stand to gain considerably. It enhances the efficiency of locating specific content, facilitating swift identification of desired information rooted in Islamic perspectives. This novel categorization approach not only streamlines the search process but also empowers users to promptly access content aligned with their information needs. As a result, the proposed framework contributes to a more productive utilization of these sermon documents, aligning with the broader objectives of aiding users in their pursuit of knowledge from an Islamic vantage point.

Humanitarian Operations Performance: A Logistics Preparedness Framework During Flood in Malaysia

Humanitarian businesses have to plan their logistics needs, plan the components they have to acquire, and supply them to the affected regions swiftly, which calls for cautious planning. With the growing number of catastrophes occurring every year, humanitarian operations have to be capable of supplying aid efficiently. This research paper analyzes the Malaysian humanitarian operations scenario as well as the logistical readiness challenges between the government agencies, namely the Malaysian Civil Defense Force (MCDF) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) registered with the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) during humanitarian operations in Malaysia. As a result, this study leveraged prior literature to provide a conceptual framework and identified three critical aspects of a successful humanitarian operations framework: logistical planning, human resource management, and logistics coordination. The NGOs additionally play a key function in easing the workloads of the authorities over the control of the post-disaster humanitarian useful resource distribution process. The most important factor for successful humanitarian operations is logistical readiness. The results showed that there were numerous logistical bottlenecks in humanitarian operations, which were caused not by the inefficiency of the humanitarian organizations but by the insecurity during the flood. As a result, a contingency plan must be developed to minimize possible risks and disruptions. Previous studies had concluded that inefficiency was the prime cause of late aid received. However, insecurity issues during catastrophes were found to be the primary factor of recurring bottlenecks in aid relief.
