Über dieses Buch

This book describes how cooperation between companies and non-profit organizations can be successfully structured. Companies want and need to take on more social responsibility, and joint projects with non-profit organizations are therefore more in demand than ever. This is not about maximizing profits through greenwashing or token commitments, but about serious corporate social responsibility projects and purpose strategies that strengthen the reputation on both sides. This requires a structured, transparent approach from the outset. The authors explain the theoretical basis and provide practical guidance on how the initiation of cooperation projects can lead to a credible and sustainable collaboration with added value for all stakeholders. An elementary part of the book is the "Code for Transparent Cooperation", a proven framework that can be applied directly in practice.A book for CSR, communication, marketing and compliance managers in companiesand non-profit organizations who strive for clear rules and an open dialogue at eye level.

Anyone who acts as a credible driver of transformation would do well to operate sustainably themselves. Transparency creates credibility and reliability. The more an organization's goals shape the design of partnerships with companies, the more authentic they can appear to the outside world. This guide provides helpful tips and orientation on how to achieve coherence.Dipl.theol. Yvonne Zwick, Chairwoman of B.A.U.M. e.V. - Network for Sustainable Management, Hamburg

Chapter 1. Companies and their Role in Society
Abstract
Companies play a central role in solving economic, social, and environmental problems. At the same time, they are also co-contributors to these very problems. Therefore, they increasingly find themselves responsible for the—not always positive—societal impacts of their activities. Not least for this reason, they are increasingly in the public eye. This chapter focuses on companies and their societal role and responsibility. It describes the upheavals at all levels and the necessity of transformation towards sustainability. It outlines the tension between ethics and economics and the various developments, but also problem areas and approaches to solutions.

Chapter 2. The World of Non-Profit Organizations
Abstract
Non-profit organizations (NPOs) represent high ethical values in society. Their legitimacy is based on their commitment to the common good. But how can these high and often very contrary expectations of their stakeholders be implemented in reality? This chapter deals with exactly this question. It helps to better understand the peculiarities and perspectives of non-profit organizations. It deals with the different roles attributed to NPOs, their characteristics and fields of activity, their understated significance as employers, as well as the question of forms of financing and the associated constraints. The chapter concludes with five theses that critically examine problem areas of NPOs and provide initial solutions.

Chapter 3. Cooperations Between Companies and Non-Profit Organizations
Abstract
In the preceding chapters, there was a thorough examination of the societal roles and challenges of companies and non-profit organizations. The following chapter describes how these two different actors interact, why there seem to be fewer confrontations and more cooperations recently, and what motives and backgrounds are behind this development. The main focus is on the problems and risks that arise for both sides and the strategies that can be used to avoid them.

Chapter 4. Credibility and Trust
Abstract
Credibility is the foundation of trust. Both are becoming increasingly important and at the same time increasingly questioned, when considering global surveys such as the “Edelman Trust Barometer” (Edelman (2022) Edelman Trust Barometer. The Cycle of Distrust. https://www.edelman.com/trust/2022-trust-barometer. Download: 1.12.2022). What is the reason for this? What is trust based on? What are parameters of credibility? And what can a company and organization do to strengthen trust? At which level must one start? This chapter answers these and many other questions.

Chapter 5. Roadmap for Equal Partnerships
Abstract
Cooperations between non-profit organizations and companies are becoming increasingly important. It’s not just about ever-increasing sums, but also more and more actors are involved. At the same time, the risks and dangers increase with the growing volumes. One of these is the lack of transparency, which can lead to open questions, skepticism, and mistrust, especially for outsiders. But it is also important internally that people who are thinking about cooperations between companies and non-profit organizations for the first time know how to develop them strategically and also secure them in such a way that they are credible and justifiable. The roadmap presented here is intended to provide the necessary suggestions and “checks and balances” for this. It outlines a practical and implementable path to credible and justifiable cooperations, including the individual steps that need to be considered.

Chapter 6. Code for Transparent Collaboration
Guidelines and Quality Standards for Cooperations Between Companies and Non-Profit Organizations
Abstract
In this chapter, you will find the “Code for Transparent Collaboration”. It is the first comparable framework in the European context and is intended to regulate the cooperation between companies and non-profit organizations, as well as serve as a guiding assistance for the resilience of cooperations. The code is the result of an extensive stakeholder process and was completed in 2020. Since then, a number of companies from Austria have already joined and publicly committed to following the guidelines contained therein. The code, as well as the list of participating companies, is available for download in German and English at https://www.transparente-zusammenarbeit.org/.

Chapter 7. Conclusion and Outlook
Abstract
This brief chapter is the summary of the book. It outlines the major changes as well as the societal challenges we are facing. Not only businesses, but also non-profit organizations are increasingly in the public focus and their role and legitimacy are being questioned. Therefore, the relevance of values and principles is increasing, not only as a theoretical construct, but as a guide and action plan. This is particularly true for cooperations between the two sectors. How these cooperations can be set up in a sustainable, solid and credible way has been outlined in this book and backed up with two practical tools: a roadmap for equal partnerships and a code for transparent collaboration.
